King Charles diagnosed with cancer
Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer. This news comes after the King was hospitalized last month for what was initially treatment for benign prostate enlargement. During this treatment, doctors discovered “a separate issue of concern,” leading to further diagnostic tests that identified a form of cancer. The specific type of cancer has not been disclosed by Buckingham Palace.
King Charles, who ascended to the throne in September 2022 at the age of 73, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, has been the heir apparent for a record 70 years. In light of his diagnosis, the King will be stepping back from public-facing duties to receive regular cancer treatment. Despite this, Buckingham Palace has stated that he will continue to conduct state business and official paperwork “as usual,” maintaining a positive outlook on his treatment and expressing eagerness to return to full public duty as soon as possible.
The decision to share the diagnosis publicly was made to prevent speculation and to aid in public understanding, recognizing the global impact of cancer on many people.
Following the announcement, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, and others have publicly wished King Charles III a swift and full recovery. Meanwhile, Prince William has been away from public engagements to care for his wife, Catherine, the Princess of Wales, who is recovering from surgery. Prince Harry, who moved to the U.S. in 2020 and stepped back from royal duties, has been in communication with his father regarding the diagnosis and plans to visit him in the UK in the coming days, according to a friend speaking to the Press Association.
